Comanche ISD Procedures for the Identification, Selection, Placement, provisions, and Learning Opportunities for Gifted and Talented Program

IDENTIFICATION OF STUDENTS

Nominations are open to students from all populations in Comanche ISD and may be made at any time by teachers, counselors, parents, or other interested persons and should be submitted to the appropriate campus principal. Parental consent is required before a student will be assessed. The students are assessed on general intellectual and creative ability. Assessment measures are collected from multiple sources according to each area as defined by the Texas Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented students. A minimum of five (5) criteria is used in the identification process. A portfolio of six products highlighting the student's special interest and ability is preferred before testing begins.

SELECTION

Once a student has been assessed and has submitted his/her portfolio, the selection committee meets and evaluates all material. Based on the criteria set by the district and the professional judgment of the committee members, selections are made for the program.

PLACEMENT

Students are then placed in the appropriate educational setting.
Kindergarten students identified by March 1. They will remain in the regular classroom and will be served through differentiated curriculum for the remainder of the year.
Students in grades 1-5 become a part of a pull out program meeting with other GT students in their grade once a week and with the regular classroom the remainder of the week.
Students in grades 6-8 remain in regular classes and are served through differentiated curriculum.
Students in grades 9-12 may choose one or more classes within the four core areas in which they will be served through differentiated curriculum and/or independent study opportunities.

PROVISIONS

Comanche ISD provides a policy for furloughs, reassessment, exiting of students from program services, transfers and appeals regarding program placement.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
