Wesley Hardin was the son of a preacher even though he killed
people. His first killing was of a slave working on one of his
friend's plantations named Mage, a big muscular Negro man. Barnett
Jones was the owner of the plantation, and he suggested to Wes
a wrestling match with Mage. Then they went over to ask Mage.
When they asked, he looked up and smiled and accepted, remarking
he hoped he wouldn't hurt them.
