Comanche, 1950-1979
Carli V. 5th
One day, I interviewed Margie
Daniel (my grandmother) about Comanche's past. I learned a lot
from her. I learned that....
In the 1950's, she saw Elvis
Presley, king of rock and roll, drive though town in his pink
Cadillac, heading north-west on highway 36.
In the 1960's and 1970's,
the Burk's had a museum. In the parades in Comanche, they drove
their Model T throughout the parades.
In the 1970's, Ted Durham
was murdered in this small town. On an early Sunday morning, Ted
was found dead with a slit in his throat.
In the 1960's, J.D. Cloud
held up the Comanche National Bank one day.
In the late 70's, The Choice
Baking Company closed down for good. This place made foods like
cookies.
During the Vietnam war,
Comanche Manufacturing Company opened making uniforms for soldiers.
The high school that we
have now wasn't always here. In the 70's, the old red-brick high
school was condemned. Then, in 1977, the first class graduated
from the brand new high school.
I learned a lot from Margie.
Now I know more about my home town: Comanche, Texas. It's a cool
town!
