Van Dyke
A Comanche School
of the Past
Van Dyke was named after a man who
donated the land to build the school. It was in the early 1,870`s
when he donated it.Thomas C. Frost, the land agent for 113 acres
from the state (in the area that became Van Dyke.)The date of
the grant was December 25, 1861, although Frost had been selling
land in that part of the country as early as August, 1,860. Van
Dyke did not "settle up" until the coming of the Texas
Central Rail Road at nearby De Leon. Newcomers arrived in De Leon
from 1,882 when the line was completed, by 1,887 Van Dyke was
described as a village. Van Dyke had one or two grocery stores,
a barber shop, drugstore, and doctor's office.
