I interviewed Mary Wilkerson who has worked for the Comanche Chief newspaper for 50 years. She talked about the P.A.R. Country Club. She told me a lot of things.
It was built in 1969 with a government loan and has just been paid off this past year. They had to have 300 members to start the club, and they had to be from Comanche, DeLeon, and Dublin. Comanche and DeLeon, who have been long time rivals, became closer because of the country club.
The first President of the club was Dr. William T. Calhoun. The first golf pro at the club was Howard Burtschell.
There used to be only nine holes. Howard Burtschell designed the nine back holes. The members of the club usually cleaned it up.
